This was a funduq: a warehouse and lodging house for travelling merchants, built around a courtyard with rooms on two galleries above. Goods below, traders above.
⭐ It is the only complete example surviving in the country, and after the conquest it served as a coal yard — which is where the current name comes from — and later a theatre.
The horseshoe arch on the street front is the giveaway. Most people walk straight past it.
