The Albaicín
The Albaicín kept the street plan of the Muslim city when the rest of Granada was rebuilt around a Renaissance grid. Narrow lanes, blank walls, and gardens hidden behind them.
⭐ It is a UNESCO listing in its own right and it costs nothing. Getting lost in it is the correct use of an afternoon; downhill always returns you to the river.
Sacromonte
Further out and higher, Sacromonte is built into the hillside in caves, and is the home of Granada's own flamenco tradition.
⚠️ Cave flamenco is both a real tradition and a heavily sold tourist product, in the same street, with the same photographs. Ask what you are booking.
Doing both in one walk
Up the Carrera del Darro, through the Paseo de los Tristes, into the Albaicín, along the ridge to the Mirador, then out to Sacromonte. It is a couple of hours at a walking pace and it is almost entirely free.
