The Bañuelo is a Moorish bath, older than the Alhambra by a long way, tucked off the Carrera del Darro behind an unremarkable door. Inside are vaulted rooms with star-shaped openings in the ceiling that let daylight fall in shafts.
⭐ It survived because it was built over and used as other things — a laundry, then a house — rather than being cleared. Most of Granada's bath houses were not so lucky.
It takes ten minutes to see and it is the closest thing in the city to touching the layer underneath everything else.
Our tip
Go when the sun is high. The light through the ceiling openings is the whole effect and it does not work on a grey day.
